Building Resilience to Flourish
Going to college is time-intensive, challenging, and can be extremely mentally taxing. College students in recent decades have faced high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and health issues. The COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated stress levels amongst college students. On-campus mental health and psychological services often aren’t enough to meet the needs of all students.
In response, GreyPrint Consulting designed a Mental Fitness Coaching Program. Piloted in the summer of 2022, at a large Big Ten institution, the program aimed to address the unmet mental health needs for BIPOC graduate students. Preliminary findings indicated mental fitness is effective at helping students develop a unique plan to thrive.
Consider it like physical fitness in many ways. If you know that you have to walk or do some light exercise to be healthy, this is the mental version of that for you to be mentally healthy.” – Pilot Student
Mental fitness, like physical fitness, is an ongoing practice we can work on every day to strengthen ourselves – to build stronger minds that are resilient and can handle the tough obstacles life throws our way. Rooted in applied positive psychology, GreyPrint’s Mental Fitness Coaching Program encompasses the following:
One-on-One Coaching Sessions to identify challenges, develop goals, and encourage action planning
Small Group Workshops to increase awareness of mental health needs and recommend tools, strategies, and resources
The results show that students see the value in mental fitness:
71% of students were satisfied with the coaching services provided
If offered again, 86% of students would participate in the program again
Across all of the workshops up to 100% of respondents reported increased awareness in mental fitness resources and techniques
“It’s like going to nutrition class for your brain... Gives you the nutrients you need to have a healthy graduate school experience.” – Pilot Student
